Director Biography
Hilda Schmelling is an Oakland, California based writer-director. Her work emerges from the SF Bay Area’s LGBTQ creative community. As a queer, feminist filmmaker she cares deeply about a specifically feminized or feminine collaborative process. That intention manifests vividly frame by frame. Her previous films include “Playing Like A Girl,” in which women from various historical periods struggle with the limitations of their costumes to play a high spirited basketball game. “A Nancy Drew Mystery,” re-imagined the classic girl detective from a queer perspective where Nancy was finally able to harness her own fantasies. “Looking Tours” is an experimental short film that examines female empowerment through acts of looking in pioneering director Ida Lupino’s acting and directorial work. Hilda began as an artist, merged into a writer, and ultimately grew into a filmmaker. Following an invigorating few years in the film department at the University of California at Santa Cruz, a lifelong bond with the moving image was solidified. Her hope for all her creations is to build cultural space for the female image to be depicted with humor, sex, humanity, and a queer investment in camp elements. Hilda’s dreams are filled with bright colors, elaborate costumes, intense emotions, and erotic potential.
